As a staffing agency it may be tempting to go a fast and cheap route: Criminal databases. Usually around $5.00 and virtually instant, these databases can be great tools for your screener but never substitute for a court-record search criminal background check.

Claiming to report criminal records nationwide, these databases are an inch deep and mile wide. They may do a great job of covering some jurisdictions that your applicant has never visited, and poor job of covering where your applicant has lived for the last ten years.

They scrape available data from the internet, including arrest records, convictions, sex offender registries but do not cover all jurisdictions. And they do not cover any criminal convictions from the federal courts.

Don’t play with your business or your customers by only using a database. You could irreparably ruin your reputation—or worse.
